Prof. Shankar Shankaran

In this presentation, Shankar will describe how renewable energy projects that contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all  are beginning to create ethical and social justice issues in the areas of Distributional Justice, Procedural Justice, Recognition Justice and Cosmopolitan Justice.

When large renewable energy projects such as solar and wind farms are built at locations around the world where poor, socially disadvantaged and indigenous people live, they result in adverse effects on such vulnerable populations. Shankar's presentation will explore how systems thinkers can work together to help the development of such initiatives while  alleviating the justice issues they create.

This talk will discuss the work of prominent scholars like Professor Benjamin Sovacool, Professor of Energy Policy at Sussex University and his co-researchers who have carried out extensive research on these initiatives.
